2015 초겨울 무렵, 나는 매우 힘든 상황에 부닥쳤다.
대개 2-3일, 길어야 일주일 안에 대상을 파악하고 고민할 틈도 없이 찍어내듯 그리는 작업에 지쳐 있기도 했고,
이를테면 갑을병정의 마지막 어디쯤에서 그림을 그려야 하는 것에도 지쳐 있었다.
엽서 한 장을 그려도 그 엽서를 구매할 사람이 아니라 판매할 회사의 담장자에게, 담당자는 부장에게, 부장은 상무에게 보고하고 눈치 보고 수정하는 방식,
좋게 말해 안정적이고 사실은 매우 평범한 결과 밖에는 나올 수 없는 상황에서 작업한다는 게 영 신이 나질 않았다.
결정적인 것은 위의 모든 방식을 기꺼이 받아들인다 해도, 일 자체가 없었다.
일이 없어서 집세 낼 돈도, 밥 먹을 돈도, 술 마실 돈도 없었다.
생각을 바꿨다. 의뢰받는 그림 대신, 내가 이미 잘 알고 있고, 내 그림을 본인의 집에 걸어둘 만한, 내게 혹은 내 그림에 얼마의 돈을 지불 할 만큼 호의가 있는 사람들에게 직접 그림을 팔아보기로 했다. 전화를 돌렸고, 그중 허락해 준 열두 명의 초상화를 그렸다.
덕분에 담배도 피우고 술도 마시고 이 작은 전시회도 하게 되었다.
Early winter in 2018, I had been very hard time. I had to make illustration only for few days without understading well.
I was making some painting like machine. I coudn.t make that for real user, had to did for so many clients. not for an only one man, for boss, for boss of boss, boss of boss of boss...... so it was looked like general painting, not a special thing. and the work like this was ended. nobody wanted my painting. I couldn’t pay the rent, food and drinks. so I found my clinent who wanted to get my paintg and could pay for that and respected my will,around me 11 friends allowed to my offer so i painted them. because of them, I could pay the rent, food, soju and could open this exhibition.
